Here's how to activate a Zong SMS bundle efficiently — covering when it's worth getting a standalone SMS package, how to verify it's running, and what to do if messages to government portals aren't delivering.
| Package | On-Net SMS | Off-Net SMS | Price | Code | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daily SMS | 300 | 100 | Rs. 6 | *700# | 1 day |
| Weekly SMS | 4,000 | 500 | Rs. 22 | *700*2# | 7 days |
| Monthly SMS Popular | 12,000 | 1,500 | Rs. 55 | *700*3# | 30 days |
Check Whether SMS Is Already in Your Zong Bundle
Dial *102# and select My Packages. If you've a Zong Super Bundle
active, it almost certainly includes SMS along with your calls and data. Look for
"SMS remaining" in the package details. Buying a separate SMS bundle when you already
have SMS in a combined plan is unnecessary and wastes money.
If you only have a standalone data or call bundle, or no bundle at all, then a dedicated SMS package makes sense — particularly if you regularly send messages to government short codes like 8171, 8300, or 668, which charge at the standard per-SMS rate from your main balance if no bundle is active.
Activate the Right Zong SMS Bundle
Zong's SMS packages are available daily, weekly, and monthly. The monthly bundle gives the lowest cost per SMS and makes sense if you send more than 30–40 messages per day. For occasional use — perhaps you need SMS for a one-time government service interaction — the daily bundle at Rs. 6 is more economical than paying the full monthly rate.
Dial the code from the table below and press Call. The on-screen confirmation shows the bundle type, SMS allowance, and validity period. You can also activate via the Zong App: open the app → My Packages → SMS → Subscribe.
Test and Monitor Your SMS Bundle
Send a test SMS to any contact. Then dial *102# and check whether
the SMS count in your active bundle has decreased by one. If the deduction came from
your main balance instead, the bundle activation may not have completed — retry
the activation code or use the Zong App method.
You can check remaining SMS at any time using *102# → My Packages.
When the bundle is near exhaustion, Zong usually sends an alert SMS. At that point
you can either renew the bundle or let subsequent messages charge from your
main balance.
What to Do if Activation Doesn't Work
Occasional delivery failures to 8171 are caused by high traffic on the BISP portal, not your SIM or bundle. Wait 20–30 minutes and retry. The portal sometimes restricts SMS delivery during maintenance windows late at night.
Check if your bundle is on-net (Zong-to-Zong) only. Many cheaper Zong SMS packages exclude off-net SMS. Look for 'All Network' in the bundle name, or check *102# for the full bundle description.
This can happen when sending MMS (photo messages) instead of SMS. MMS is charged separately from both SMS bundles and main balance — it uses data or a specific MMS charge. Make sure you're sending plain text SMS only.
Frequently Asked Questions
You receive OTPs as incoming SMS — that's free on all networks including Zong. Your SMS bundle or main balance is only used when you send outgoing SMS. No bundle is needed just to receive bank or app verification codes.
Dial *102# and select 'My Packages' from the menu. Your active SMS bundle will be listed with the remaining message count. Alternatively, send 'Status' to 310 for a text summary of all active bundles.
No. WhatsApp messages travel over the internet and use your data bundle. Traditional SMS and WhatsApp messages are completely separate systems. Your Zong SMS bundle only covers regular SMS sent through your phone's built-in messages app.
Some Zong recharge promotions include bonus SMS with specific top-up amounts. Check the Zong App for current recharge offers. Outside of promotions, SMS requires either a bundle or charges from your main balance.
