Pakistani passport renewal uses the same DGIP portal process as a new application — the key difference is that you submit the expired or expiring passport at the appointment and keep it until collection of the new passport.

4 Steps to Renew Your Pakistani Passport

Log in to dgip.gov.pk, select Renewal Application, pay via bank or card, attend biometric appointment with old passport and CNIC — old passport is returned cancelled when new one is collected.

Step 1

Check When Your Passport Expires

Look at the data page of your passport — the expiry date is printed clearly. Renew well in advance: many countries require at least 6 months' validity remaining on your passport for entry, and some visa applications require validity beyond your planned travel dates. Start the renewal process at least 3–4 months before expiry.

If your passport has already expired, the renewal process is the same as for a valid passport — DGIP accepts expired passports for renewal without any additional penalty or requirement.

Step 2

Log In to DGIP Portal and Submit Renewal Application

Go to dgip.gov.pk and log in (or create an account if you don't have one from a previous application). Select "Renewal Application." Your existing passport details auto-populate. Confirm or update your information (address, profession, emergency contact) and select the new passport's validity (5 or 10 years) and book size (36 or 72 pages).

Submit the form to generate a payment challan. Pay online or at a bank branch. Once payment is confirmed, book your biometric appointment at the nearest passport office.

Step 3

Attend the Appointment With Your Old Passport

At the appointment, bring your original old passport (the one being renewed), your original CNIC, and the payment receipt. The officer scans your old passport, captures fresh biometric data, and processes the renewal. Your old passport is not retained at this stage — you keep it until your new one is ready.

When you collect your new passport, the old one is cancelled (perforated) and returned to you. Keep the cancelled old passport — it may contain valid visas that are still usable, and it serves as a travel record. Most countries accept you entering on a valid visa in a cancelled passport accompanied by the new valid passport.

Step 4

Track and Collect Your Renewed Passport

Track renewal status at dgip.gov.pk using your application number. Processing typically takes 15–30 days (normal), 7 days (urgent), or 3 days (executive). When marked "Ready for Collection," collect from your designated office — bring your CNIC and receipt. TCS home delivery is available for an additional courier charge.

Passport Application Problems

I lost my old passport — can I still renew?

A lost passport is treated as a 'Reissuance after Loss' rather than a straightforward renewal. You'll need an affidavit of loss and may need to report the loss at a police station. Contact DGIP at 051-9205736 for the specific documentation required.

Old passport has a valid visa that I still need — will it be cancelled?

Your old passport is cancelled (perforated) and returned to you. The visa pages remain readable. Most countries accept a valid visa in a cancelled passport when accompanied by your new valid passport — confirm with the specific embassy for your destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — you can renew at any time before expiry. Many people renew 1–2 years early when they have an upcoming trip requiring 6 months of remaining validity. The new passport's 5 or 10-year validity starts from the date of issuance.

Yes — DGIP offers 36-page and 72-page booklets. The 72-page option is at a higher fee and is recommended for frequent international travellers who fill their passports with stamps and visas quickly.
